Alphabetic Knowledge: knowing the names and shapes of the letters of the alphabet.Blending: putting together individual sounds to make spoken wordsComprehension: the ability to understand and gain meaning from what has been readDecodable books: Books that are made up of words that contain only the letter-sound relationships that the children are learning, along with a few words that are taught as sight words.Fluency: the ability to read text accurately and quickly with expressionPhonemic Awareness: the ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds in spoken wordsAlphabetic Principle: the understanding that words are made up of letters and letters represent soundsPhonics: the instructional method that focuses on letter-sound relationshipsHigh Frequency Words: these are the words that appear frequently in printed material. These words might also be called sight words. Often, these words do not follow the phonics rules.-
